What is a family lawyer and why do I need one?

Just about every family has a family doctor — someone you can call in case of illness or for routine medical checkups. It is just as important to have a family lawyer—a lawyer who knows the family and can help keep them “legally healthy” by advising them concerning their legal rights and interests.

The family lawyer is someone who can be called on to meet the legal needs of your family. The family lawyer can be called when you are buying or selling your home; when wondering if refinancing your mortgage makes sense. You can call her when your family is faced with the possibility of having to place a loved one in a nursing home. She can be called when the child support check did not arrive or there are problems with visitation of your children. She is available when it is time to prepare or review your wills, or if you need to probate an estate.

The information contained in this and the linked pages is not to be construed as legal advice. Legal advice should not be given on a computer network, especially one which crosses state and national boundaries, because the law varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction and because of concerns about unauthorized practice of law (a criminal violation) in those jurisdictions in which the author is not licensed. Proper legal advice can only be obtained from an attorney licensed to practice in your jurisdiction who is competent in the specialized area of the law, whom you consult and hire, and who then assumes the obligation to protect your rights and explain your responsibilities.
